    Why you'll love this drink

This passion fruit drink is spot on if you're looking for a beautiful drink that is non-alcoholic, delicious, and that can be served to the whole family and friends. Here's why you'll love it:

Non-alcoholic drink: This is a mocktail, which means it's attractive and delicious but doesn't contain alcohol, being the perfect choice to serve on occasions where you want to impress but you know some people don't drink or will have to drive.

Delicious combination: Did you know that passion fruit and strawberry are a great match? They go really well together and pair perfectly with the sweetness of the coconut water, the tang of the lime, and the fizzy of the seltzer water.

Beautiful and exotic: Passion fruit is an exotic fruit given that it's not very easy to find, and many people have actually never tried one. Its bright yellow pulp contrasts with the black seeds and red strawberries, making for a beautiful drink.

Healthy: This drink packs a punch of health benefits. Passion fruit is rich in vitamins A and C, dietary fiber, and antioxidants. Strawberries are a source of many vitamins, while coconut water offers natural electrolytes. By opting for seltzer water instead of sugary sodas, you're making a healthier choice for hydration.

    Ingredients and substitutions

*See the recipe card for quantities.

Passion Fruit: The star of our show! Passion fruit delivers a unique sweet-tart flavor with floral undertones. You'll need the pulp and seeds for the look we are going for. If you can't find passion fruit, you can opt for frozen passion fruit pulp or juice available in many stores. If possible, prefer those that contain the seeds for a more rustic look.

Strawberries: They add natural sweetness and a beautiful color to the mocktail. If strawberries aren't in season, you can try other fruits like raspberries, peach, or mango.

Coconut Water: Coconut water provides a sweet and refreshing base for our mocktail. Its subtle nutty flavor enhances the tropical experience. If you're not a fan of coconut water, you can use just seltzer water.

Seltzer Water: For the carbonated experience that makes mocktails so enjoyable. You can substitute it for club soda, sparkling water, or tonic water with a slight difference in taste. Read the "What's the difference between Seltzer water and sparkling water" FAQ section to understand their differences. Or use a soda pop like Sprite if you want it sweeter and don't mind the sugar.

Lime: Lime adds a citrusy kick to the drink. Freshly squeezed lime juice is the best option here.

Ice cubes: Because no one likes a warm drink.😉

How to make this passion fruit drink

Making this passion fruit mocktail is very easy. Here are the photos for guidance.

Adding sparkling water to a cup with ice, coconut water, passion fruit pulp, strawberry pieces and lime juice.

Hint: You can also add a liquid sweetener of choice if you want it sweeter, or use Sprite if you don't mind the sugar.

    Variations

While this drink is delicious as is, here are 2 ways you can jazz it up and make new awesome combinations:

Make it tropical: Add some mango or pineapple pieces to have some amazing tropical flavors.

Make it Sweeter: When I first tried this drink in Brazil, made by my sister-in-law, it was made with Sprite. It is super delicious and very sweet when made with this soda. If you don't mind the sugar, you can use Sprite, and you won't be disappointed.

    Choosing and storing Passion Fruit

When choosing passion fruit, look for slightly wrinkled skin, avoiding the ones with very smooth skin (underripe) or overly shriveled (too old). Depending on the variety, the color can range from deep purple to golden yellow but always go for the ones with vibrant and consistent colors. They should feel heavy for their size, meaning that they are filled with juicy pulp, and they should also be fragrant and have no cracks or mold on the skin.

Store them at room temperature until they ripen. Once ripe, you can refrigerate them for a few days to prolong their freshness. When it's time to eat, cut the fruit in half and scoop out the contents with a spoon.

    FAQ

    What is a mocktail?

Mocktails are non-alcoholic cocktails that offer all the flavor and enjoyment of traditional cocktails without the alcohol. They're a mixture of fruit juices or other soft drinks, beautifully garnished to enhance the experience. They're perfect for any occasion, whether for a refreshing pick-me-up during a hot day or a sophisticated drink option for a gathering.

    Can I use frozen pulp?

Yes, you can. Sometimes, finding the fruit is hard, so you can definitely use the frozen pulp. Take a look at the ingredients and give preference to those where passion fruit juice is the only or first ingredient on the list.
Let it thaw first, then proceed with the recipe.

What's the difference between Seltzer water and Sparkling Water?

Seltzer water and sparkling water are both carbonated beverages, but they differ in their composition. Seltzer water is plain water infused with carbon dioxide, resulting in bubbles but no additional minerals or flavors. Sparkling water is carbonated water that naturally contains minerals, giving it a slightly enhanced taste. To understand more about the world of carbonated waters, check out my article about Seltzer vs. Sparkling water vs. Club soda, where I explain in detail their differences, uses, and health benefits.

    Ingredients

    • Ice cubes (enough to fill ¼ of the cup)
    • 7 fl. oz. coconut water 200 ml
    • 3 tablespoons passion fruit pulp, including seeds
    • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
    • 4 medium strawberries, cut into small pieces
    • 7 fl. oz. seltzer water (or sparkling water) 200 ml
    • 2 Extra strawberries and lime wheels for garnishing optional

    Instructions

    • Add ice cubes into 2 cups and add coconut water, dividing it equally between cups. Cut passion fruit in half and scoop out the inside. Add about 1 ½ tablespoons of passion fruit pulp and the lime juice to each cup. Mix them with a spoon.
    • Divide the strawberries pieces into the 2 cups and top them off with seltzer water. Garnish both cups with a strawberry and a lime wheel, making a small cut on both so they can fit the cup. This decoration is optional.
      Enjoy while cold.

    Notes

For a sweeter drink, you can add a sweetener like agave nectar or any liquid sweetener of your choice. I've tried honey, and I don't think it goes well here.
Sprite can also be used if you like a sweet drink and don't mind the sugar.
