This is a delicious treat, very popular in Brazil. It's called "Palha Italiana" (Italian straw) in Portuguese, although it was truly created in Brazil and not Italy.

It's made the same way as brigadeiros are, which consists of cooking sweetened condensed milk on the stove top, but for this one, pieces of biscuits/crackers are added.

What I like the most about this recipe is that it's very customizable. Because we use drink mix in the recipe, we can have a great variety of flavors and colors.

For exemple, if you are having a "Hulk" themed party, you can choose the lime flavor, and have green treats. If you're planning for Valentine's day, you can choose strawberry flavor and have pink treats. I was making some Easter treats, so I chose lemon (yellow) and strawberry (pink) flavors. Just think of your theme, and what drink mix could go with it.

    How to make it

Making Fudge with sweetened condensed milk and biscuits is very simple. Here is a step-by-step for you.

    Variations

As I mentioned before, you can use any drink mix flavor, according to the flavor and color you desire.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the amount of drink mix to be used will vary greatly according to the brand and flavor being used.

For the Lemon version, for example, I used the "Country Time" brand, and I needed 5 tablespoons to achieve the flavor I wanted. On the other hand, for the strawberry flavor, I used "Crush" and just 1 tablespoon was enough for my taste.

So I suggest you start with 1 tablespoon, mix it, taste it, and add more if necessary, tasting it after each addition.

You can also add different kinds of crackers, biscuits or cookies. Although Maria cookies are the ones used in the traditional recipe, you can also use animal crackers, Nilla Wafers or even Graham crackers.

    Serving suggestions

You can serve this fudge on a tray, jar, or inside mini muffin liners.

You can also place some inside a glass jar and give it as a gift or cut them bigger and wrap individually to give to friends or as a party favor.

    Storing

Store it in an airtight container, in the fridge, for about 4 days.

    Ingredients

    • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk (396g)
    • 3 oz heavy cream (100 ml)
    • 1-5 tablespoon drink mix (flavor of choice) (start with 1 tbsp, add more as desired)
    • 2.5 oz biscuits/crackers (70g) (Maria, animal or Graham crackers)
    • ½ cup Powdered sugar (60g) (for coating)

    Instructions

    • Break biscuits into smaller pieces (about 1"). Set them aside in a closed container.
    • Line a 8x8 baking dish with plastic wrap (I like using cling wrap), leaving some extra plastic wrap hanging around the sides.
    • In a medium saucepan, with the heat off, add sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream and drink mix. Mix everything until completely combined.
    • Turn on the medium-low heat (I'm using a large burner), and stir it constantly, until it thickens and moves more like a block. You should be able to see the bottom of the pan when you tilt it. It usually takes about 11-13 minutes, but the time will depend on the heat intensity of your burner, your pan and the brand of condensed milk being used. Be careful with spatters. Turn off the heat and let it cool for a while, but not completely.
    • Stir it with a spoon, before adding the cracker, then, add the reserved crackers, being careful to not add the crumbs. Mix it again to combine.
    • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, using the back of a spoon to spread it evenly throughout the dish. Cover with the extra plastic wrap that was hanging on the sides. Let it cool completely.
    • Remove it from the dish and plastic wrap, and cut it with a knife into squares. Wet knife with a little water if fudge is too sticky.
    • Dip each square into the powdered sugar, shaking off the excess. I also like using a little brush to remove any excess sugar.
    • You can serve it on a tray, inside mini muffin liners or even inside a glass jar.

    Notes

Keep it refrigerated if not eating on the same day.
