Ingredients and Substitutions
I've tried to keep things as simple as possible for this recipe while still delivering the best flavors and texture, making everything from scratch instead of using an industrialized pudding mix.
- Green grapes - Seedless grapes are a must; don't use seeded grapes. You could use other colored seedless grapes or fruits here; just make sure they pair well with chocolate.
- Milk - I like using regular 2% fat or full-fat milk for richer and tastier results. You could use other types of milk, but remember that changing the type of milk can significantly impact the flavor and consistency of the pudding.
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Egg yolks
- Cornstarch
- Vanilla extract
- Chocolate bar - Choose a good quality chocolate bar for a great flavor. I find that using half milk chocolate and half semi-sweet gives the perfect balance of flavor, sweetness, and color. Using just milk chocolate makes it lack color, and using just dark chocolate makes it lack sweetness.

How to make this Grape Dessert
This grape dessert is easy to make and requires minimum effort. Here are the step-by-step photos for guidance.
*Complete and detailed instructions are in the recipe card at the end of this post.
Whisk together milk and cornstarch in a medium pan with the heat off.
Add sweetened condensed milk. Whisk to combine.
Sieve egg yolks, removing the chalaza and any remaining egg white. Whisk to combine egg yolks with the milk mixture.
Cook it on medium heat until it starts to bubble. Lower the heat, whisk for 1 more minute, and turn the heat off.
Add vanilla extract and stir.
Measure the pudding and divide it into 2 equal parts. Refrigerate one portion and bring the other portion back to the pan.
Add the chocolate and mix until completely combined and uniform. Refrigerate until no longer warm.
Assembly the grape dessert by making a layer of grapes, a layer of vanilla pudding, another layer of grapes, and a layer of chocolate pudding. Decorate as you like. Refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours.
Hint: I find that 5oz (147ml) cups are the perfect size to assemble this dessert.
Variations
Would you like to have even more options with this dessert? Try it with other fruits too! Strawberries and kiwis are great options.
Storage
Keep it closed and refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Make it ahead of time
You can make the puddings, wash the grapes, and keep everything in the refrigerator until it's time to assemble it. Or, you can assemble all the cups and keep them all closed with plastic wrap in the fridge until it's time to serve.
Top tips for a delicious grape dessert
- I suggest you stick to regular cow's milk in this recipe, being full fat and 2% fat the best options for a good consistency. Almond milk, soymilk, and other types of milk can greatly impact this recipe's flavor and/or texture.
- Add good-quality chocolate to the chocolate pudding. Adding poor-quality chocolate will make your chocolate pudding taste not as good as it could.
- Mix the chocolate pudding vigorously with a whisk after adding the chocolate bar for a lump-free and shiny pudding.
- Once the puddings are ready, cover them with plastic wrap touching the surface, and this will avoid creating a dry film on the top.
FAQ
You can use green grapes or any other colored grapes; just make sure they are seedless grapes. Most people don't like to bite into grape seeds in a dessert.

Grape Dessert
Ingredients
- 18 oz seedless green grapes (500g) (cleaned and dried)
- 17 fl. oz milk (500 ml) (2% or full fat)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk (396g)
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3.5 oz milk chocolate (100g) (broken into small pieces)
- 3 oz semi-sweet chocolate (90g) (broken into small pieces)
Instructions
- Wash and dry the grapes and set them aside in the fridge.
- In a medium pan, whisk together milk and cornstarch off the heat until cornstarch is completely dissolved.
- Add sweetened condensed milk and stir until combined.
- Sieve egg yolks, removing the chalaza and any remaining egg white. Whisk to combine egg yolks with the milk mixture.
- Cook it on medium heat until it starts to bubble. Lower the heat, whisk for 1 more minute, and turn the heat off. Add the vanilla extract and whisk to combine.
- Measure the pudding and divide it into 2 equal parts. Refrigerate one portion, covering it with plastic wrap touching the pudding. Bring the other portion back to the hot pan.
- Add the broken chocolate pieces and mix until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is lump-free and uniform. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes or until pudding is no longer warm, with a plastic wrap touching its surface. Don't let the chocolate pudding get too cold before assembling it; it might be more difficult to spread it in the cups.
- Choose a serving cup. Assembly the grape dessert by making a layer of grapes, a layer of vanilla pudding, another layer of grapes, and one layer of chocolate pudding. The number of grapes to be used will depend on the size of the cups. For 5oz cups, I found that about 10 grapes were a good ratio for the amount of pudding in each cup, but you can use more or less to your liking. Decorate as you wish and refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours before serving.
